The egg turns

Day 4 of nesting today and looks like there is only going to be one egg. The female was seen rejecting the males advances today so looks like the female has decided one egg is enough.

The day was warm but few people visiting, which was great for the birds. We did have one photographer with a very long lens and binoculars knocking the nesting bird off nest to try and grab a photo. Tracking his movements to and from nesting site it was obvious he was here just for photos of the nesting birds, not sure how the news of nesting is getting out. I was not quick enough to get over and ask before he left.

Today also saw 6 bar-tailed godwits on the Spit, returning from their breeding trip to Alaska.

The bevy of black swans are also still present so they may also be settled into a breeding programme here. It has been a long time since they last chose to breed here according to some locals.

Our journey of discovery managing a beach nesters breeding site.

21 September 2015 we found a pair of eggs sitting on the Deeban Spit beach. Thus our crazy journey began. So much to learn.

The opinions expressed in this blog are my own.

So much thanks goes to Sutherland Shire Council, Birdlife Australia and  NSW Office of Environment and Heritage as they have supplied equipment and research required to help ensure our shorebirds, resident or migratory, can survive into the future.
