Important areas for the birds

The above aerial map highlights which areas the birds use. It is very important that drones are not flown over the top of the areas marked as nesting areas, which is mainly the areas around the Bonnie Vale campground and extending down about one third of the way of Deeban Spit.

The nesting birds think the drone to be a sea eagle and they immediately flee the nest and stay away much longer than from any other disturbance leaving the eggs unprotected. If there is a raven hanging close by, it would swoop in and take the unprotected eggs very quickly.

The opinions expressed in this blog are my own.

So much thanks goes to Sutherland Shire Council, Birdlife Australia and  NSW Office of Environment and Heritage as they have supplied equipment and research required to help ensure our shorebirds, resident or migratory, can survive into the future.
