So many black swans, such a surprise

It was wonderful today to turn up at Constables Point, just off the car park at Maianbar, and find 25 black swans in various stages of sleeping and preening.

It was such a shame that it was today that saw the return of the black swans.

Today, the NSW government did a serious back flip (though they claim it wasn;t but any one with even half a brain knows it is) and has shut down the consultation process on marine parks between Newcastle and Wollongong. They have taken the no fishing in their anticipated marine park areas off the table because of an Alan Jones, via Fishers, Shooters and Farmers campaign.

They have effectively given in to 2GB, Alan Jones and Hadley, the Fishers, Shooters and Farmers parties. Those of us that like to snorkel, swim, scuba, watch birds or even swim without fear of being run over by an errant jet ski or tinny, have been left high and dry. Pun intended.

Deeban Spit is an area where a small population of critically endangered eastern curlews feed and rest, and endangered oystercatchers nest. But the fishers and shooters are way more important than endangered wildlife, obviously.

Democracy is dead people!

Take the fine! Don't bother voting, it does you no good. Branches are stacked. The only people the branches vote for are those that will further the financial interests of those in the branch.

Our journey of discovery managing a beach nesters breeding site.

21 September 2015 we found a pair of eggs sitting on the Deeban Spit beach. Thus our crazy journey began. So much to learn.

The opinions expressed in this blog are my own.

So much thanks goes to Sutherland Shire Council, Birdlife Australia and  NSW Office of Environment and Heritage as they have supplied equipment and research required to help ensure our shorebirds, resident or migratory, can survive into the future.
