Duck season!

While not shorebirds it is great to record unusual birds to the area. Above is a 'raft' of grey teal ducks. They aren't known for visiting coastal waters but this group does make an annual visit to the waters outside the Bonnie Vale campgrounds and are an impressive sight.

We have also been seeing a lot of the more common ducks such as Pacific Black and above the mallards that are coming with late season ducklings visiting the creek side to get their little charges fit without subjecting them to the waves. Wonderful to be seeing so much this time of year as our migratory curlews seem to have departed for the arctic circle trip.

Our journey of discovery managing a beach nesters breeding site.

21 September 2015 we found a pair of eggs sitting on the Deeban Spit beach. Thus our crazy journey began. So much to learn.

The opinions expressed in this blog are my own.

So much thanks goes to Sutherland Shire Council, Birdlife Australia and  NSW Office of Environment and Heritage as they have supplied equipment and research required to help ensure our shorebirds, resident or migratory, can survive into the future.
