Oystercatcher spotted trying to catch a nap on the beach edge

Good Friday indeed. The Oystercatchers have taken a break since Xmas because the beach has been so busy. Today I saw one resting on the water's edge. With the weather being a little rainy traffic walking along the waters edge was light so it did get to take a small nap before having to take flight back to a quieter area. Good to see they are still willing to come and see if the area is quiet enough to try for a rest.

It does look like our migratory birds have mostly departed. Second to last count was 5, latest just one but need to go out again when tides are perhaps mid tide restricting them to tighter feeding grounds.

The winter counts can give us a better idea of how breeding is going. See notes on Eastern curlew on Birds page.

Our journey of discovery managing a beach nesters breeding site.

21 September 2015 we found a pair of eggs sitting on the Deeban Spit beach. Thus our crazy journey began. So much to learn.

The opinions expressed in this blog are my own.

So much thanks goes to Sutherland Shire Council, Birdlife Australia and  NSW Office of Environment and Heritage as they have supplied equipment and research required to help ensure our shorebirds, resident or migratory, can survive into the future.
